Note the date of the clean, when the mark reappeared and whether people had used the area. Identify its position: tea point, entrance, desk route or an isolated spot. Record which products were used if known. That history makes a follow-up inspection more useful.
Residue can attract soil
Shaw’s carpet-care guidance explains that sugary spills or detergent left after cleaning can leave residues that attract soil. A mark may therefore look like a stain even when fresh dirt is sticking to a residue. The suitable response depends on the fibre and treatment history.
An entrance problem may need an entrance review
If the affected area follows the route through a door, review matting, vacuuming and incoming soil with the building’s cleaning team. A programme that repeatedly cleans the carpet without reviewing routine care may miss an avoidable contributor.
Do not assume every dark area is removable
Physical wear, pile distortion and permanent colour change can remain after soil is removed. Compare a representative test area and record the observed result. A cleaning contractor should explain the limits rather than promise that every mark will disappear.
A useful follow-up brief
- Where the mark is and how soon it returned.
- Whether the area was used after cleaning.
- Any known spill or previous spot-treatment product.
- Photographs taken from a consistent position, with permission.
- Carpet product details or an offcut, if available.
Avoid repeatedly mixing or applying cleaning products while the cause is uncertain. Follow the product instructions and your site procedures. For hazardous or unknown contamination, notify the responsible site team.
Use the finding to change the next visit
The next step might be a targeted treatment, a review of routine care, a different scoped method or recognition of permanent damage. Agree it after inspection and keep the result in the condition log.
