For facilities managers and building managers in London, this is an evidence and approval task. It is not a home fibre-identification exercise. Pristine does not hot-water-extract viscose, rayon or art silk; unsuitable work must be declined or referred for appropriate specialist assessment.
Ask for the product, not just a fibre description
A note saying “office carpet” is not a product specification. Ask the managing agent, fit-out team, installer or supplier for the product name and reference, where available, together with the current care information for that product.
Record where the document came from and which areas it covers. A building may contain more than one installation, and a replacement tile may not match the surrounding product. Do not assume a specification from one floor applies to the reception or communal corridor.
Bring drawings, available labels and existing care documents to the commercial carpet survey. Photographs can help record visible condition and locations, but a photograph alone does not establish fibre identity or permission for wet cleaning.
Build a short evidence request
Use the following checklist to ask for the missing information. Leave unknowns visible instead of filling them with a likely answer.
Swipe across the table to see all columns →
| Information requested | What to record |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Manufacturer, range and reference where available |
| Relevant location | Floor, room or marked zone covered by that record |
| Fibre and construction | Documentary details and any uncertainty |
| Manufacturer care instructions | Document or link, version if shown and source |
| Installation information | Available backing, fixing and installation restrictions |
| Known history | Previous treatment, damage or changes reported by the building |
| Missing evidence | Named person obtaining it and decision still outstanding |
This is a preparation checklist, not a guarantee that a product can be wet-cleaned. The supplier still needs to assess the carpet, condition and proposed treatment. Avoid treating an old quotation or a record of a previous clean as a substitute for product-specific guidance.
Keep the approval boundary clear
The building contact should know which proposed method is under review, who is reviewing the evidence and what remains unresolved. A generic booking approval should not conceal a technical question about the carpet.
A useful decision record can be brief:
Zone: [identified area]. Product evidence: [document/source or unknown]. Proposed method: [to be confirmed]. Restrictions or questions: [record]. Evidence owner: [name]. Supplier assessment: [pending or recorded]. Approval status: [hold or agreed scope]. Review contact: [name].
Use the record as a working communication tool. It does not replace the supplier’s assessment, manufacturer guidance or the building’s own approval procedure.
What if nobody can find the specification?
Assign one person to follow up with the installer, supplier or manufacturer. Explain the intended method and ask for guidance relevant to the actual product. Record the response and the areas it covers. Do not infer approval from a lack of reply.
Until the uncertainty is resolved, keep the affected work conditional or outside the approved scope. Discuss whether other verified areas can be assessed separately without confusing their approval with the unresolved zone.
An appropriate test may inform a professional assessment, but it does not replace manufacturer instructions or establish permission to ignore a restriction. Avoid trying chemical tests or a small wet patch yourself to identify an unknown carpet.
Separate technical suitability from reopening arrangements
Even after a suitable method is agreed, the building still needs an access and handover plan. Drying depends on the actual carpet, method and conditions; do not use a generic estimate as a guaranteed release time.
The method comparison guide explains the questions around encapsulation and hot water extraction. Keep that guide as the method comparison resource; this checklist is for obtaining and recording the evidence behind the decision.
